Hammerton

Hammerton is the next intermediate station on the route after Cattal and is 8¾ miles distant from York. the two stations constitute an oasis of traditional branch line working, sandwiched between the modern electronic signalling systems of York and Leeds.

The original station buildings survive on the up platform; the station house is in private hands but the remaining buildings are used by the signalman and for passengers as a waiting room. On the up platform is an original North eastern Railway signal hut that houses the lever frame working the signals at the station. Erected by the North Eastern railway in 1914, it is one of the last surviving examples of a small signal hut, once quite a common feature on the lesser lines of their southern division. The lever frame fits snugly into the hut and the doors can be closed so that it may be secured safely when not in use.
