The Settle to Carlisle line begins at Settle Junction, which is still the site of a fine Midland Railway Signal box. The junction is 234 miles from St. Pancras Station in London. Settle Junction is where the "Little North Western Railway" line to Lancaster and Morecambe diverges. The "Little North-Western Railway", was opened in June 1850 and re-dates the opening of the Settle-Carlisle Railway by over 25 years.

There was once a station located here at the junction, the original Settle Station, complete with goods facilities, but it was short-lived and had closed by November 1877. The junction is still manually signalled although in recent years the distant semaphore signals have been replaced by 2 aspect colour lights. From Settle Junction to the 1,151 ft. point, just inside the Blea Moor Tunnel, the line climbs 700 feet in the first 12 miles. This climb is the notorious "Long Drag".

This is a standard 10ft + 10ft Midland Railway design of signal box which was opened on the 14th of September 1913. It replaced a box of 1892 vintage which in turn had replaced an 1874 structure.

In 1960 the 25 lever Midland Tappet lever frame was replaced by a standard 1943 pattern frame of 31 levers.

Until 1922 there also existed a second signal box at Settle Junction, the south box. This was built in 1874 and was renewed in 1894. A Midland Railway Way and Works Committee Minute No.13865 records the authorisation for the removal of the south box. The crossover connection to the Up Siding had been removed in 1913. The Up Siding itself was removed in 1968 leaving only two sidings connected to the down main line.

The junction with the Carnforth line was remodelled into the present ladder configuration after the derailment of the St. Blazey - Carlisle freight which took place on the 1st May 1979.
