At the top of the gill are the extensive remains of the Blakethwaite Lead smelter.the Blakethwaite mines are about half a mile futher northwards. The smelter and the remains of the associated Peat Store (Peat was used as the fuel for smelting) are in the course of being restored.

Peat was dug from the surrounding moors, dried and brought to the store ready for use in the smelting process.
