The
Coniston Copper Mines |
This
abridged article is taken from the new NVM Digital "The
Coniston Fells" CD-ROM and therefore has not been optimised
for web viewing, so loading is not amazingly fast. However, I'm
currently working on speeding it up. The article here consists
of 4 pages and a coloured map. There is very little information
about these mines currently on the web, so it is worth being
patient and having a look! The Cumbria Amenities Trust has produced
a comprehensive CD-ROM of the underground workings for mining
enthusiasts.
Copies
can be ordered at £12.00 + £1 P and P from:

Biggar
Gasworks |
A description of one of the only two remaining
small town coal gasification plants in the U.K. This site is
located at Biggar, Near Edinburgh (the other is at Fakenham,
in Norfolk). The article describes the plant and process which
was typical of so many works which served our smaller towns up
until the end of the 1970's and which were displaced by Natural
Gas piped directly from the offshore oil and gas fields. |
